Recently, someone asked me what to do when persistent efforts yield no results. My response to him is, ‘maybe re-strategize if your methods are not working but never ever give up. Persevere and try again and again’.
Only a few individuals succeed; they are the ones who persist despite setbacks and failures.
When I decided to embark on a solo weekend trip to ride a speedboat on the Pacific Ocean thousands of miles away from home, a trip which was meant to be a group trip except that everyone backed out at the last minute. Undeterred, I resolved to enjoy myself and booked various activities to create lasting memories, just as I would have in a group setting.
I booked an Aquaworld Jungle Tour experience, anticipating an instructor to guide me on the speedboat. However, to my surprise, the instructor had his own boat and I had to be on mine alone.
What! as a novice without prior experience in driving a speedboat, this rule seemed daunting. However, they assured me that if I could drive a car, I would manage just fine with basic instructions.
Feeling reassured, I boarded my cute yellow boat eagerly. But as we ventured into the vast ocean, the endless expanse of water surrounding me filled me with fear, it was just like being enveloped in clouds outside an aircraft. Panic gripped me, and I turned back.
The instructor followed me in his boat and tried to reassure me but that didn’t work. Then he posed a crucial question: Would I like to cancel the experience? I vehemently declined. Giving up was not an option; I was determined to conquer this new challenge.
I waited for a while for any other individual who could join me in my boat but after over one hour of reflection with no individual explorer like me, I resolved to proceeding alone. I couldn’t waste my expensive ticket and journey to South America.
Summoning all my courage, I ventured back into the ocean, albeit with trembling resolve. Remarkably, after ten minutes of riding, I gained confidence and steered the boat with newfound proficiency, gliding across the waves for ninety minutes like a seasoned pro.
This experience taught me that often, we underestimate our abilities due to fear. But with courage, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
If we wait for others to lead the way, we may never embark on our own journeys.
Therefore, we must confront our fears and pursue our goals with determination, even if we have to do it afraid.
So, I encourage anyone reading this, set clear goals and pursue them with unwavering courage.
The only way to achieve anything worthwhile in life is to face it boldly.
Best wishes on your journey.
