8 Unconventional Planning Tips

Whether you are jetting off for a business trip or a well-deserved vacation, smart planning can transform your travel experience.

Want to travel like a pro? Here are 8 unconventional tips I have picked up along my travels that will be super helpful for your travel planning.

1. The 2/3 Rule
Plan activities for only 2/3 of your time, reserving 1/3 for unexpected discoveries or downtime.

This prevents over-scheduling and allows for a more relaxed pace.

2. Use the “Sandwich” Method
Book your must-do activities for the first and last few days, leaving the middle flexible.

This creates anticipation and ensures you don’t miss out, while allowing for lots of spontaneity and discoveries

3. Schedule “Sense-Specific” Experiences
Plan at least one activity that engages each sense (taste, smell, touch, sight, sound) e.g hiking or paragliding scenic view, beach relaxation, local cooking class, local market tour, live music, cultural events, museum visit etc.

This creates a more immersive and memorable trip.

You can use platforms like Viator, GetYourGuide, Tripadvisor, Airbnb Experiences for this.

4. Incorporate a “Local Connection” Day
Plan a day with a local guide, to eat with them. Let them show you their favorite spots off the tourist track. You can also choose to volunteer your time, expertise and/or experience.

This provides authentic experiences and supports the local community.

You can use platforms like Worldpackers and Airbnb Experiences for this.

5. Create a “Decision-Free” Day
Pre-plan one entire day from wake-up to bedtime, include all meals, activities, and transportation.

This gives your brain a break from constant decision-making, reducing travel fatigue.

6. Plan Your Rest Stops
Research and map out scenic rest areas, unique cafes, or interesting pit stops along your route.

This turns your travel time into part of the experience, rather than just a means to an end.

7. Use the “Reverse Planning” Technique
Start by planning your last day, then work backwards. Ensures you end on a high note and don’t leave must-dos until it’s too late.

This helps prioritize activities and creates a satisfying trip arc.

8. Use ‘Google My Maps’ for Visual Planning
Plot your points of interest on a custom Google Map, and you can color-coding by day or activity type.

This helps visualize your route and cluster nearby activities efficiently.

These strategies will transform your travels, making them more enjoyable and less stressful. They work just as well for a weekend getaway as they do for extended business trips.
